Carnarvon to Coral Bay

Saturday 3rd May 2008

I was keen to get away quickly because Carnarvon held no interest for me so the girls installed themselves in the car with the laptop and watched Wallace and Gromit (a Saturday treat, according to Holly!) while Paul and I packed up.

We did a side trip to the blowholes at Quobba which involved a 100km detour but meant we could get out and stretch our legs. They weren’t exactly well signposted and Paul had to execute (a very neat, I must say) turn at a rather full beach campsite before we found the empty carpark with no signs – just some life rings with no ropes attached.

We walked across a rather lunar landscape to a suitable vantage point and waited for the waves to do their magic. And the spout was actually quite impressive with some tiny ones in the background, too.

The road up to Coral Bay was relatively empty and easy and we found our designated spot with no trouble – right next to the camp kitchen (ok, so that is handy), miles from the ablution block (not good when you have Katie travelling with you) and opposite the big shed with all the tools and machines and especially the big diggers and tractors. Don’t know what they were doing with them but it was noisy. Oh, and the pump that uses reverse osmosis to turn bore water into drinking water is right here too – running 24hrs a day. I guess we’ll get used to them. At least the campsite is very close to the beach, the sun is shining and it’s warm!

We had steak, salad and mash for dinner with a couple of beers – very civilised. And then we watched the last two episodes in the first series of Six Feet Under (our turn for the tv). We still have four series to go – it’s very strange but I miss it when I’m not watching it – sad, huh?
